Charting Your Academic Path

To successfully navigate your academic path to graduation, we suggest you take advantage of the resources BYU provides to assist you. Following the steps below will help you in your academic planning and course registration.

Choose a Major

Once you decide on a major, you need to declare it officially. Some programs are open enrollment, others require you to apply. To declare or change your major, click on "Change Your Major" under the Tools sidebar in MyMAP.

Obtain a copy of your degree requirements

• Undergraduate Students:
  Major Academic Plans (MAPs)
  
  • Includes all university core, major, and university requirements sequenced into a four-year plan.
  • Available at your college advisement center (CAC), or in MyMAP under your student summary.

  MyMAP System

  • an interactive system which tracks university core and major requirements, as well as which ones you have completed or still need to complete.
  • Access is available through MyBYU.

Undergraduate Students
Your CAC can help you with questions and concerns as you work on your degree. They may be able to provide you with valuable information on class curriculum, instructors, and the workload of classes for which you will register.

Graduate Students
Contact your department with questions and concerns as you work on your degree.

Be familiar with deadlines

All add/drop and tuition deadlines are listed online. You will incur additional fees and penalties if you act after the printed deadlines. If you miss a deadline please contact the appropriate office for further questions. If your major requires a separate admissions process, be aware of the deadline for the application and the requirements to be admitted.

Plan out your schedule

Using the Class Schedule and MyMAP, plan out your schedule with several options in mind. Classes will often fill up, so be flexible and consider afternoon and evening sections of classes. The Class Schedule is available online at http://classschedule.byu.edu.

Check for registration holds

There are several holds that can block your registration. Any hold placed on your record must be removed by the office that placed that hold before registration will be available to you. You may have a hold because you have unpaid fees or because you need to speak with a particular office. The MyMAP system (under the Summary or Registration tab) shows if you have any holds.

Register for classes

On your priority registration day, you may begin the registration process using MyMAP. If you are not satisfied with your initial schedule of classes, check for available seats periodically, you may be able to enroll in the classes you desire before the first day of school.

Finalize your schedule

Try to finalize your registration before classes begin. Once your schedule is complete, print it from the MyMAP system. Know where your classes are located and buy your textbooks.
